Scientific Programme Abstracts Workshop Meetings Singapore & More Stipends Prizes and Awards |
CONSUMER STIPENDSConsumer Stipends application deadline has now passed. Thanks to all those who submitted applications. Notifications will be sent out by end of June. The Cochrane Collaboration is committed to the active involvement of consumers and consumer advocates in the preparation and dissemination of systematic reviews and in furthering the aims of the Cochrane Collaboration. Stipends to help cover the costs of travel and expenses to the Cochrane Colloquium in Singapore are available for consumers from both developed and developing countries. Funds are, however, very limited, so if you can find some or all the money you need from another source (such as your local consumer or self-help group, or the Cochrane entity with which you are involved), please do so. To apply for a Consumer Stipend, please read the criteria and application instructions below. Eligibility The Cochrane Collaboration defines a health consumer as someone who is affected by a health condition, or who uses or is entitled to use a health related service, and who is generally not a health professional or practitioner. A consumer advocate or representative is a consumer who is actively involved with other consumers and is able to represent the perspectives and concerns of that broader group of people. The Cochrane Consumer Network considers its members to be people who contribute as consumers to the Cochrane Collaboration, particularly in giving their views on the relevance and readability of Cochrane reviews, and who support the aims of the Consumer Network. People from the geographical area where the Colloquium is held (i.e. Asia incl. China) are especially encouraged to apply. Criteria Applicants must be contributing to the Cochrane Collaboration as an active consumer or consumer advocate. Active involvement must have started no later than October 2008. Applicants need to be strongly recommended by a review group, field, network, centre or other Cochrane entity. Applicants will be judged according to the following criteria: • Contribution to the work of the Cochrane Collaboration • Contribution to consumer activities in the community • Recommendation from a Cochrane entity • Contribution to the Colloquium in Singapore • Anticipated gains from attending the Colloquium • Ability to raise partial funds to support attendance at the Colloquium Given sufficient funds, a limited number of stipends will be set aside to ensure the participation of newcomers to the Cochrane Collaboration, local consumers and consumers from developing countries. Successful applicants will be expected to attend for the duration of the Colloquium and to submit a short report (1 page) on their experiences. What costs are covered? Funds may be available for one or more of the following: • Travel to and from Singapore - the stipend will cover the cost of the most economical return air fare and taxes • Ground travel expenses from your home to the airport • Accommodation at one of the Colloquium hotels for a maximum of 6 nights • Registration fee, which entitles you to attend all sessions, the Welcome Reception and Farewell Party • Visa and travel insurance • Allowance for meals not included in the registration fee and ground travel expenses in Singapore To enable as many people as possible to be supported to attend the Colloquium, our preference is to provide partial support only. We will, however, consider providing full support in some cases. If you are requesting full support, please indicate in your application why this is necessary. How to apply 1. Complete the Consumer Stipends application form. The form can either be completed online or downloaded as a Word document and emailed, faxed or posted to the Colloquium Stipends Secretariat. Application deadline is Monday 1 June 09. Request a letter of support from the Cochrane entity with which you are affiliated and who can best explain the extent of your contributions to The Cochrane Collaboration. Our preference is that you request just one letter of recommendation from the Cochrane entity you are most closely involved with. However, if you contribute equally to more than one entity, then a second letter of recommendation is permitted. Letters of support will be sent directly from the Cochrane entity to the Colloquium Stipends Secretariat. What happens next? Applicants will be acknowledged by email. If you do not receive confirmation, resubmit your application and contact the Secretariat. After the submission deadline, applications will be screened and those meeting the eligibility criteria will be considered by the Consumer Stipends Committee. You will be notified of the results of your application by Monday 29 June 09. Confirmed members of the Consumer Stipends Committee are: Caroline Rouse (Co-Chair) Janet Wale (Co-Chair) Maryann Napoli Liz Whamond Juliane Ried (Secretariat) Note: Please don't register for the Colloquium before you receive notification of the outcome of your Stipends application.
