DEVELOPMENT COUNTRY STIPENDS

Developing Country Stipends application deadline has now passed.

Thanks to all those who submitted applications. Notifications will be sent out by end of June.

The Cochrane Collaboration is committed to promoting and supporting the involvement of contributors to the Collaboration who are from developing countries.

Stipends are available to help cover travel costs and other expenses associated with attending the Cochrane Colloquium in Singapore in October 09. Funds are, however, very limited, so if you can find some or all the money you need from another source (such as the Cochrane entity with which you are involved), please do so. To apply for a Developing Country Stipend, please read the accompanying criteria and application instructions.

Eligibility Contributors to the Cochrane Collaboration who are permanent residents in developing countries (low, lower-middle and upper-middle income economies as defined by the World Bank) are eligible to apply. Please note that consumers living in developing countries should apply for Consumer Stipends.

Contributors based in upper-middle income countries and applicants that are employed directly by Cochrane entities are eligible for partial funding only; at least 25% of the total costs are expected to be covered by the applicant.

Criteria Applicants must be contributing to the Cochrane Collaboration as a review author, editor, trials search co-ordinator, Cochrane peer reviewer or co-ordinator of Cochrane activities locally. Active involvement must have started no later than October 08. Applicants need to be strongly recommended by a review group, field, network, centre or other Cochrane entity. Applicants will be judged according to the following criteria:

• Involvement in the Cochrane Collaboration • Recommendation from a Cochrane entity • Contribution to the Colloquium in Singapore • Anticipated gains from attending the Colloquium • Ability to raise partial funds to support attendance at the Colloquium

Successful applicants will be expected to attend for the duration of the Colloquium and to submit a short report (1 page) on their experiences.

What costs are covered? Funds may be available for one or more of the following:

• Travel to and from Singapore - the stipend will cover the cost of the most economical return air fare and taxes • Ground travel expenses from your home to the airport  • Accommodation at one of the Colloquium hotels for a maximum of 6 nights • Registration fee, which entitles you to attend all sessions, the Welcome Reception and Farewell Party • Visa and travel insurance • Allowance for meals not included in the registration fee and ground travel expenses in Singapore

To enable as many people as possible to be supported to attend the Colloquium, our preference is to provide partial support only. We will, however, consider providing full support in some cases. If you are requesting full support, please indicate in your application why this is necessary.

How to apply Complete the Developing Country Stipends application form. The form can either be completed online or downloaded as a word document and emailed, faxed or posted to the Colloquium Stipends Secretariat. Application deadline is Monday 1 June 09.

In a change to previous years, Stipends applicants are not required to request letters of support from Cochrane entities. Instead, for applicants that score highly, the Stipends Secretariat will contact the nominated Cochrane entity for endorsement of their application.
